Colour mixing

After children have mastered the application of paint to a surface, introduce another colour and allow them to play with the new colour in relationship to the first colour. Ask questions as you work together with the paint. Talk about the colours and the names of the colours. Discuss what happens when the colours mix together. At different dilution levels the artist can get an amazing range of different tints of the mixed colours.

Finger paint a snail

1. Paint a green circle over a yellow one for the shell.

2. Draw a curved line for the head and body. 3. Dab on an eye and small black dots for the feelers.

1. For pink colour mix red and white, dip a clenched fist, drag along the paper to make the body.

2. Dip the thumb smudge it above the end making a round shape. Use the middle finger to create the ears.

3. Mix a little red in the pink and press with the middle finger to make piggy’s nose. With a squiggle of the little finger make piggy’s tail.

4. With the middle finger draw piggy’s legs. Dot with little finger white paint for the eyes followed by black paint on the little nails for toes, nostrils and pupils.

Finger paint a caterpillar

1. Turn to the curly caterpillar page. Dip a middle finger in some blue paint and a pointer finger in some yellow paint. Press down a blue finger, then a yellow finger. Keep going! You’ve painted a caterpillar’s body.

2. Dip the thumb into some yellow paint and press it down to make the caterpillar’s head.Move your thumb around in a smudgy circle to make the head big enough.

3. Using the little finger, draw the feelers above your caterpillar’s head in red. Finger-dot lots and lots of red feet and add some red spots .

4 .Finger-dot some blue eyes and blue markings above the yellow bits. Dip the thumb into green paint to add clumps of grass for the caterpillar’s feed.

Finger paint a monkey

1.Use a smudgy thumb print of brown for the head followed by clenched fist for the body just below the head.

2. Use the little finger for the long curly excited tail

3. Use the middle finger for the legs and ears and smudge a little to create the feet.

4. Add a tree for monkey to swing on using yellow in a vertical line for the trunk followed by green lines for the palm leaves.
